Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
NEW PURPOSE IN WAYNE: The long-abandoned Butler Correctional Facility is set for a new life as a hardwood sawmill, with Westbury Lumber Co. chosen as the preferred developer by the Wayne County IDA. Westbury Lumber, a wholesaler of hardwood lumber to cabinet, flooring, and molding manufacturers, plans to repurpose much of the 201-acre facility, focusing on expansion and storage.
OFFICE BUILDING UPDATE: Cayuga County officials will hold a special legislature meeting on Thursday to update residents on the status of county services displaced by the ongoing closure of the county office building at 160 Genesee Street. The 58-year-old building has faced multiple setbacks this year, including roof damage from January storms, asbestos-related issues following May rains, and a fire on August 14.
VOTER SCAM: The Ontario County Board of Elections is alerting voters to be cautious of potential text scams as the November 5th General Election approaches. Scammers are increasingly using text messages to trick voters into sharing personal data, downloading malware, or sending money. Some messages may even aim to confuse voters or cast doubt on election results.
OVER $100K STOLEN: The Marbletown Volunteer Fire Department has filed a lawsuit against former fire chief William Storrs and his wife, Nicole, accusing them of embezzling approximately $125,000 from the department. The Finger Lakes Times reports the suit, filed Monday in State Supreme Court by Syracuse-based attorney Bradley Pinsky, alleges that the couple used department funds for personal expenses, including purchases at businesses, restaurants, and even a vehicle down payment.
FUNDRAISER LAUNCHED: A GoFundMe has been started to assist with funeral expenses for Alicia Farr, a Wayne County woman who tragically passed away following a serious car accident on August 25. Farr, who suffered a stroke while driving on Fuller Road in Montezuma, crashed into a tree and was pronounced dead at Upstate Hospital later that day.
