Finger Lakes Forecast: Icy conditions this morning!
Presented by Generations Bank!
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Cayuga, Seneca, Ontario, Wayne, and Yates counties until 4 PM today. The region can expect up to 3 inches of snow and sleet accumulation with ice accumulation reaching one-tenth of an inch in places. Hazardous travel conditions are likely, particularly during the morning commute, due to slick roads and reduced visibility. Winds may gust up to 35 mph, further complicating travel, so caution is advised for those driving or venturing outdoors.
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
Amazon driver Tyler Elton was awarded the Civilian Life Saving Award for saving two women trapped during a Seneca Falls house fire. Elton noticed smoke on his delivery route and acted quickly, rescuing a woman and her wheelchair-bound companion from approaching flames. Local police praised Elton’s courage, emphasizing the rarity of such honors in Seneca Falls.
Over 150 trucks lined up in Ontario, New York, as suppliers struggled to meet rock salt demand caused by prolonged cold weather. American Rock Salt confirmed historic demand levels, prioritizing municipal clients over contractors to maintain road safety. Governor Kathy Hochul’s administration reassured residents that state contracts remain sufficient to handle winter needs.
The New York State DEC issued 250 comments on Seneca Meadows’ draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for a landfill expansion. Most comments addressed grammar and clarity, but others called for updates on methane emissions, pollution control, and environmental justice compliance. Seneca Meadows must revise and resubmit the DEIS before public hearings can proceed.
Corrections officers have confirmed that inmate Adam Lafferty’s death in Five Points Correctional Facility was a homicide, with his cellmate under investigation. Lafferty was found on December 23 with injuries consistent with strangulation and blunt force trauma. The incident adds to rising violence reports in the prison, prompting investigations from state police and the Attorney General.
Congresswoman Claudia Tenney temporarily closed her district offices after receiving multiple violent threats against her staff. She called for peaceful discourse and thanked law enforcement for their prompt response in ensuring safety. While in-person operations are suspended, Tenney encourages constituents to share concerns through her official website.
