Two Cheshire firefighters were honored with the Heart Starter Award on March 26 by the Ontario County Safety Council. The prestigious award was given in recognition of their crucial role in reviving a patient from cardiac arrest following a severe car accident. State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli reported a significant increase in mental illness among New Yorkers alongside a concerning decrease in available psychiatric beds. Federal data revealed that 21.1% of New York adults experienced mental illness in 2021-2022, with a severe condition affecting 5.1%. This uptick in mental health needs comes as the state saw a 10.5% drop in inpatient psychiatric facility beds from April 2014 to December 2023, resulting in 990 fewer beds. [KEEP READING]
And finally — prosecutors in Ontario County say former Rochester police officer Shawn Jordan, age 40, of Bristol, entered a guilty plea to second-degree rape and forcible touching in Ontario County Court. Sentencing is scheduled for June 25, according to prosecutors, who say Jordan admitted to having sexual contact with a child under 15 during the summer of 2022. [KEEP READING]
