In a move to correct past cultural insensitivities, a new sign has been erected at Canandaigua City Pier for Skenoh Island, formerly known as Squaw Island. The change comes two years after the official renaming of the island in 2021. The new sign, funded by the Canandaigua Centennial Endowment, not only marks the renaming but also provides a brief history of the island, its significance to the Haudenosaunee or Seneca Confederacy, and its status as the smallest wildlife management area in the state. A recent study by the Center for Governmental Research (CGR) recommends that North Seneca Ambulance and South Seneca Ambulance should merge into a single emergency medical services provider and enter into a contract with Seneca County. Wells College has sold the 125-year-old McGordon House at 110 Main Street in the village of Aurora, igniting a contentious debate in the community. The property, acquired for $425,000 by Kevin Fitzgerald, co-manager of the college’s golf course, through Aurora Route 90 Group LLC, includes a significant lakeside land parcel. Fitzgerald plans to demolish the historic house in the spring to construct two long-term rental homes. [Read More]
