Toxic blooms in Finger Lakes set record in 2024: Owasco Lake called region’s ‘canary in the coal mine’ for HABs
Blooms of toxic cyanobacteria “exploded” across the Finger Lakes this worst-ever season, as Seneca, Canandaigua, Skaneateles and Cayuga lakes each had more than 100 reports of harmful algal blooms, or HABs. The outbreaks began in June — earlier than ever — and continued through late October. Swaths of streaky green water were widespread, plaguing the lakes for weeks at a time during the season’s peak in September. Peter Mantius has a full-breakdown of the 2024 HABs season below.

Wells College selects CBRE to manage campus sale as part of closure
Wells College has appointed international real estate firm CBRE to oversee the sale of its campus in Cayuga County, as part of efforts to meet financial and regulatory obligations, according to the college’s October alumni newsletter. The move follows the college’s earlier announcement of its closure, citing financial challenges and declining student enrollment.

Auburn City Council cancels two meetings that conflict with holidays
Officials in Auburn say some changes are on the horizon with its meeting schedule, as the holiday season arrives. City Council voted to cancel sessions set for Thursday, Nov. 28, which coincides with Thanksgiving, and Thursday, Dec. 26, the day after Christmas.
