Geneva City Council weighs preferred developer for Exchange Street site
Geneva City Council is on the verge of selecting a preferred developer for the long-vacant former Office of Economic Opportunity site on Exchange Street. During a February 25 work session, council members reviewed presentations from a team of developers who responded to the city’s request for qualifications. City Manager Amie Hendrix called the moment a significant step toward revitalization. “The information shared last night marks an exciting moment for both the Council and community as we have an opportunity to come together and shape the future of a site that has long been waiting for revitalization,” Hendrix said.
Finger Lakes Forecast: Snow showers arriving.
The Finger Lakes will see unsettled weather over the next few days, with periodic rain and snow showers and fluctuating temperatures. Highs will range from the upper 40s on Thursday to the low 20s by Sunday, with gusty winds adding to the chill. While precipitation chances vary, the area can expect mostly cloudy skies and occasional snow showers, especially heading into the weekend.
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
A Rochester appeals court has rejected Greenidge Generation’s request to delay administrative actions by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) regarding its air permit. According to The Finger Lakes Times, the Fourth Judicial Department denied the company’s motion to halt the DEC’s review while Greenidge appeals a previous court ruling. Greenidge had argued that the DEC’s decision to deny its permit renewal in 2022 was flawed. Though a judge found errors in the denial, the ruling allowed the DEC to restart its review.
Jeremy Hourihan, Schuyler County’s Chief Assistant District Attorney, has announced his candidacy for Schuyler County District Attorney in the upcoming November election. Hourihan made the announcement on February 26 at the Seneca Lake Events Center, where he was joined by more than 70 supporters. Current District Attorney Joseph Fazzary, who plans to retire at the end of his term on December 31, introduced Hourihan at the event and endorsed him as the best candidate to succeed him.
After more than a decade of continuous operation, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office has unveiled a newly remodeled Communications Bureau, giving 911 dispatchers an upgraded workspace to better serve the community. The renovation marks the first major update to the dispatch center in 12 years. The improvements include modernized workstations equipped to handle emergency calls and operate on the county’s multi-frequency emergency communications system.
As New York correction officers’ strike continue past 11 days, demands to repeal or review the HALT Act remain at the forefront. However, an earlier state review found that outdated recordkeeping within DOCCS made it impossible to track compliance with the law. Inspector General Lucy Lang’s 2024 report revealed that paper-based logs hindered efforts to determine whether incarcerated individuals received mandated rehabilitative programming and out-of-cell time. Lawmakers remain divided, with some open to pension reforms but unwilling to revisit HALT.
Officials in Ontario County issued a brief statement Wednesday following the indictment of two additional suspects in the murder of 24-year-old Sam Nordquist, bringing the total number of individuals charged in the case to seven. “Our hearts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” the statement read. “Confidentiality laws prevent Ontario County from sharing any details about individuals who may have been receiving assistance. We remain committed to serving and supporting our community during this difficult time and will continue working closely with the appropriate authorities.”
