More violence at Five Points: Union outlines second incident within days
A second violent incident at Five Points Correctional Facility left four officers injured after an inmate armed with a sharpened toothbrush resisted a routine frisk, just weeks after a separate altercation led to officers being hospitalized due to exposure to an unknown substance. The two incidents have highlighted growing safety concerns, particularly regarding violent attacks and potential drug exposure among staff. Investigations are ongoing as union officials call for immediate action to curb contraband and protect corrections personnel.
Finger Lakes Forecast: Finally feeling like spring
The Finger Lakes will see a mix of sun and showers through the weekend, with highs near 78°F on Thursday before cooling to the low 60s by Saturday. Rain chances increase Friday afternoon and peak overnight into Saturday, with possible thunderstorms and gusty winds. Cooler, breezy weather follows Sunday with sunshine and a high near 58°F, before a warm, dry Monday gives way to more showers by Tuesday.
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
At its meeting this week, the Cayuga County Legislature approved a series of measures focused on public health, economic development, and environmental protection, including a resolution opposing the expansion of the Seneca Meadows landfill. Lawmakers also accepted major state health grants, supported summer youth programming, and authorized new appointments, staffing changes, and legal settlements. Public comment highlighted concerns over child protective services staffing, roadwork impacts, and Owasco Lake protection, while the board scheduled its next session for May 27 to address proposed salary adjustments for county officials.
The Little Finger Lakes region is undergoing a grassroots transformation as local residents rally around a vision of sustainability, heritage, and community-driven growth. A second public workshop will be held on April 27 in Hemlock to build on momentum from February’s inaugural event. Organizers aim to shape the region’s future through inclusive dialogue, creative planning, and shared values.
Ontario County Clerk Jean Chrisman is urging residents to prepare for the upcoming Real ID deadline, which takes effect May 7, 2025, requiring a Real ID, Enhanced ID, or valid passport for domestic flights and entry to certain federal buildings. Chrisman advised bringing all necessary documents and a completed application to the DMV, noting longer wait times due to increased demand. While upgrades can still be made after the deadline, not all residents need to switch—standard licenses remain valid for those who don't travel by air or enter secure federal facilities.
Firefighters from multiple departments responded to a two-alarm blaze on Twelve Corners Road in Cayuga County after a chimney fire escalated into a full structure fire. Crews from Owasco, Auburn, Skaneateles, and others worked together to bring the flames under control. Investigators are now working to determine the cause of the fire.
New York’s state budget remains incomplete more than three weeks past deadline, with lawmakers passing a seventh temporary funding bill to avoid a government shutdown. The delay centers on Governor Kathy Hochul’s push for non-fiscal reforms, including a school cell phone ban and mental health policy changes, which have stalled negotiations. Despite public support for the proposals, frustration is growing, and lawmakers may need to pass yet another extender before a full budget can be finalized.
