Finger Lakes hit hard by HABs over Labor Day week; Owasco and Canandaigua took the brunt
The good news for Owasco and Canandaigua lakes is that cyanobacteria blooms were relatively rare events this summer — if you assume that summer ends on Labor Day. The bad news began arriving the very next day. Owasco area volunteers reported at least 26 blooms during Labor Day week, including 12 on Tuesday, Sept. 5. Through late August, Owasco had had only one cyanobacteria bloom — or HABs (harmful algal blooms), as they are commonly known. On Sept. 6, volunteers on Canandaigua spotted 14 blooms. Before Labor Day, only three had been reported on that lake all summer.
Pursuit in Wayne County ends in orchard crash; suspect apprehended after attempting to flee on foot
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office have given an update on a pursuit that took place during the afternoon hours on Wednesday, and concluded with a crash a little after 4 p.m. Deputies had been alerted by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office to assist in capturing Trent Goodrich, a 22-year-old Wolcott resident, who had outstanding felony warrants from multiple cases in Cayuga County. Additional charges from Wayne County are pending the completion of an ongoing investigation.
City of Canandaigua will pay $1.5M in settlement over 2017 police shooting
The City of Canandaigua has agreed to pay $1.5 million to the family of Sandy Guardiola, a parole officer who was fatally shot by Canandaigua Police Sgt. Scott Kadien during a wellness check in 2017. Court documents reveal the settlement was finalized on Tuesday. Sgt. Kadien, who had served 15 years with the Canandaigua Police and has since resigned, alleged Guardiola drew a gun on him during the encounter. A grand jury later found the shooting justified and opted not to press charges against Kadien.

Iconic Auburn diner set to be relocated amid safety concerns
The famed Hunter Dinerant, a staple of downtown Auburn since 1951 and overlooking the Owasco River, is gearing up for a move due to concerns about its current location’s safety. The city of Auburn, which became the diner’s new owner through a tax foreclosure in May, has indicated that the establishment needs to be relocated because of the potential risk it poses in the event of a dam breach upstream. A breach of the Mill Street Dam could endanger lives if anyone were inside the diner during such an event.
