Avian Flu confirmed in Snow Geese around Seneca Lake
Avian Flu has been confirmed in snow geese found dead along the shores of Seneca Lake, raising concerns for both wildlife and the local community. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation collected and tested carcasses, confirming the virus's presence earlier this month. Residents are advised to avoid contact with dead birds, as the outbreak is part of a larger national surge in Avian Flu cases.

Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital will open a new urgent care facility on February 3, expanding healthcare access for residents of Penn Yan and surrounding communities. The new facility will offer walk-in services for minor injuries and illnesses on weekdays, with plans to extend hours. Patients can access same-day rapid testing for COVID, flu, and strep, joining other urgent care centers in Geneva and Seneca Falls under the UR Medicine network.
The Canandaigua City Council advanced several key initiatives at its January meeting, including a climate resiliency plan, increased surveillance for public safety, and housing support programs. The council approved installing lakeshore surveillance cameras to enhance security, although privacy concerns were raised by some residents. Other actions included funding home repair initiatives, scheduling a public hearing on the city’s comprehensive plan, and addressing water quality issues.
A 24-year-old man was arrested on felony drug charges after a two-year Wayne County narcotics investigation. Alexis Broida was taken into custody in Rochester by the U.S. Marshals Service on an indictment warrant issued in 2023. The arrest is part of a large-scale probe involving 48 suspects, with Broida charged with drug possession and conspiracy.
Greenidge Generation has filed an emergency appeal to delay DEC hearings regarding its air permit, sparking criticism from environmental advocates. The cryptomining facility near Seneca Lake faces legal challenges over noncompliance with New York’s climate laws due to high greenhouse gas emissions. Environmental groups argue that prolonged legal delays endanger the community, while Greenidge seeks to justify its continued operations.
The Seneca County Board of Supervisors advanced projects for airport expansion, housing, and infrastructure improvements. Plans include building a new T-hangar at Finger Lakes Regional Airport and applying for a $1 million grant to develop housing units. Officials also discussed watershed protection efforts, emphasizing coordination between authorities to secure future state funding.
