Different look on FingerLakes1.com? Homepage given a refresh for 2025.
If you’re a frequent visitor of our website you probably noticed some changes this morning. While all of the content readers, viewers, and listeners are accustomed to seeing is present—things have been shifted around—with more emphasis placed on frequency of updates. The most notable change is our top story getting broader exposure—along with our most recent podcast. Replacing our ‘top-10’ section is a shrunken version—with the next three biggest stories from all of our sections. After that, our homepage features better promotion of our most-frequently visited sections of the website—including News, Life, Sports, Podcasts, and National Interest. It was all built in an effort to help readers see more of the content we’re publishing every day.

Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
Our biggest story today is Upstate New York waiting for Governor Kathy Hochul’s State of the State address, which is set to take place at 1 PM. We’ll be bringing that to you LIVE when it happens, but in the meantime, our top story online right now features the key debates leading up to that address.
The city of Geneva’s chief law enforcement officer is saying lowering the speed limit on South Main St. won’t address issues raised by local residents. While lowering the speed limit there has been debated—law enforcement contends that better radar enforcement is the answer.
President Joe Biden commuted the sentence of Andrew LaVigne, a Lansing accountant convicted of fraud and money laundering in 2019. While his punishment was shortened due to health issues—it’s unclear what put LaVigne’s case on the President’s radar.
A growing number of New York Democrats, from progressives to moderates, now support expanding involuntary hospitalization for severely mentally ill individuals without permanent homes. They’re also calling for increased housing and mental health resources. However, some officials and advocates remain skeptical of such moves.
In the latest sign of the technological times—SUNY is adding AI and civics to its 2026 curriculum. According to officials, the changes aim to equip students with skills for ethical AI use, critical evaluation of information, and respectful civic engagement. It’ll all be part of SUNY’s 30-credit general education requirement.
