EXCLUSIVE: NY schools working to improve kids’ mental health
Schools in New York are prioritizing students’ mental health with a $1 billion investment in school-based supports made last year. Despite this, over half of the 179,000 children with major depression remain untreated due to insurance barriers, staffing shortages, and limited access. Advocates emphasize the importance of schools in fostering resilience, while proposals like loan repayment programs aim to address the shortage of mental health professionals.

Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
Emergency crews responded to a dramatic crash on the New York State Thruway, where a car became wedged under a tractor-trailer. Despite the severity of the situation, all occupants escaped without injuries, and the Clyde-Galen Fire District, alongside Weedsport Fire Department and other agencies, managed the scene. One lane of the Thruway was closed during the incident, with Pullens Towing assisting in vehicle removal.
Virtual arguments in the legal dispute between Greenidge Generation and the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) have been rescheduled for Wednesday in Yates County Supreme Court. The case revolves around the DEC’s denial of Greenidge’s air permit and Greenidge’s attempt to delay further referral while appealing a prior ruling. Despite the ongoing litigation, Greenidge continues operations as usual.
Ryan Corbett, a Dansville resident detained by the Taliban in 2022, has been freed as part of a prisoner exchange. Alongside Corbett, another American, William McKenty, was released, with the U.S. returning Taliban member Khan Mohammad to Afghanistan. Officials reiterated their commitment to bringing detained Americans home, despite the complexities of such negotiations.
Wells College has accused the village of Aurora of hindering its closure process by proposing landmark status for three college-owned properties. Residents argue the buildings, designed by architect Walter Netsch, hold cultural significance, but Wells opposes the designation, citing financial burdens and property rights concerns. Despite opposition, Aurora’s Community Preservation Panel advanced the proposals, with a public hearing scheduled for Feb. 19.
Several Finger Lakes communities have been awarded over $4.5 million for infrastructure projects through New York’s Community Development Block Grant program. Local awards include $600,000 for Butler to improve Town Hall accessibility, $2 million for Dresden’s water distribution system, and $2 million for Interlaken’s wastewater treatment plant. These grants, part of a larger $27 million statewide initiative, aim to address regional economic and infrastructure needs.
