By Thursday and Friday, skies will remain partly sunny with highs in the low-to-mid 30s and calm winds.
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
The Department of Environmental Conservation has extended the review deadline for Seneca Meadows Inc.’s draft Environmental Impact Statement to January 31, 2025. The landfill, New York’s largest, processes up to 6,000 tons of waste daily and seeks approval for an expansion to operate until 2040. Officials will announce a public comment period or hearing once the review is complete.
The court case involving two suspects charged in a Canandaigua dog attack has been delayed until January 29. Casey Murphy and Madison Herendeen face assault and reckless endangerment charges after their pit bull injured two people in August. The delay follows the upcoming transition to a new city judge on January 1.
Deputy Molly Turnbull and motorist Ponell Kittles, both injured in a serious crash earlier this month, have been released from the hospital and are recovering at home. The collision occurred on December 9 in Hopewell when Turnbull's patrol vehicle, responding to an emergency call, collided with Kittles' SUV. The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for the community's support and confirmed the crash remains under investigation.
Governor Kathy Hochul has vetoed the “Grieving Families Act” for the third time, citing concerns about rising insurance premiums and potential impacts on the healthcare system. Supporters argue these fears are overstated, while critics accuse Hochul of favoring big business over grieving families. Despite bipartisan support, an override of the veto remains unlikely in Albany.
A former Auburn Correctional Facility inmate has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for assaulting two on-duty correction officers. Windsor Coleman, 35, was convicted in July but refused to appear at his trial and was sentenced in absentia. The Cayuga County District Attorney emphasized accountability for violence against correctional staff and praised the prosecution team.
UPSTATE HOOPS: Wrapping 2024, tournament week, and new power rankings
The final days of 2024 are upon the Wayne-Finger Lakes basketball season. Jim Sinicropi, Kyle Evans, and Paul Russo discuss the week for the teams. The guys look ahead to the final week of games of the year, which sees many teams getting in non-league games in tournaments. Lastly, the power rankings are revealed for the last time this year.
Hochul vetoes key child care bills, sparking backlash
Gov. Kathy Hochul is under fire for vetoing two bipartisan child care bills aimed at easing financial burdens on families and altering eligibility rules. One bill sought to eliminate minimum earnings requirements, while another aimed to decouple child care assistance from rigid work-hour tracking.
