Finger Lakes Forecast: Presented by GoNetSpeed!
GUSTY WINDS, SOGGY, AND MAYBE EVEN A LITTLE SNOWY
A warm front will move through early today, followed by a cold front that will bring rain and gusty winds. Expect wind gusts between 40 and 45 mph in some areas, particularly east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Light rain will turn to wet snow showers, especially in higher elevations east of the lakes, before tapering off later in the day. Temperatures will remain above normal, hovering in the upper 30s to mid-40s throughout Tuesday.
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
City leaders in Auburn are seeking a $1 million state grant to help reopen the historic Hunter Dinerant, closed since 2022, as part of a larger $4.8 million renovation project. Developers have proposed structural and floodway adjustments to address safety concerns over the Owasco River. A decision on the grant is expected next year, potentially breathing new life into the 1951 landmark.
The Canandaigua Police Department, in partnership with Canandaigua Academy students and staff, hosted a highly successful 2024 Toys for Tots drive. Donations flowed in with support from the Marine Corps Reserves, local honor societies, and police associations that contributed an additional $1,100 in toys. Organizers expressed deep gratitude for the community’s generosity in making the holiday season brighter for children in need.
The Fleming Fire Department is urging community members to consider a New Year’s resolution that benefits everyone: joining their volunteer team. New recruits receive free training, equipment, tax incentives, and tuition reimbursements. Interested individuals can learn more online or by contacting the department directly.
The New York State Thruway Authority will temporarily close the I-90 westbound ramp at exit 41 (Waterloo) for overnight maintenance on December 18 and 19. Travelers are advised to use exit 42 (Geneva) as a detour during the closure. Motorists should plan accordingly and stay updated on traffic conditions.
State agriculture officials report new sightings of the invasive spotted lanternfly in Geneva and other upstate areas, raising concerns for over 100 plant species, including economically vital grapevines. Residents are encouraged to report SLF sightings and destroy egg masses to help curb the pest’s spread. Without intervention, SLF infestations could cost New York hundreds of millions of dollars annually, prompting urgent coordination among state agencies and community members.
