Elected officials in Watkins Glen and Schuyler County had long assumed that efforts to expand the mine had died in 2008 in the wake of intense local opposition. They had no idea the DEC was quietly considering various new versions of the expansion plan for well over a decade without ever notifying them. The agency shocked them when it disclosed in early January that it was preparing to issue a state permit for the latest plan to quintuple the mine’s acreage. [Read More]
Geneva’s police chief remains on paid administrative leave. That statement came from City Manager Amie Hendrix on Monday after FingerLakes1.com received documents from a Freedom of Information Law request filed on January 10. Matthew Colton, who was appointed chief of police in July 2023, was placed on paid administrative leave in early-January because of an ‘oral personnel complaint’ against him. [Read More]

On February 8 families in the Romulus Central School District were notified that Principal Christopher Puylara is “not in the office or available through school email.” We obtained the notification, which went out at 10:04 a.m. from Superintendent Martin Rotz after reports that Puylara was placed on administrative leave.
