EXCLUSIVE: Mass deportations will have major impact on FLX, NY economy, report says
Mass deportations will have major effects on New York’s economy, a new report says. The study revealed that industries like hospitality, child care, farming, and construction would face workforce shortages, while the state could lose over $3 billion in taxes from undocumented immigrants. Experts suggest that providing pathways to legal status would increase tax revenue and help counter population declines in upstate communities.
Finger Lakes Forecast: Presented by GoNetSpeed!
Squalls head south this AM; then areawide snow tonight.
There’s going to be a brief break between a heavy blast of snow this morning, which should be out of the area by 8 AM, and an areawide snowfall set to impact the Finger Lakes tonight. Snow showers will linger into the day Wednesday, which means the AM commute could be a bit tricky. Everyone can expect a few inches of new snow by Wednesday. However, areas closer to Lake Ontario could see upwards of 4-6 inches. Temperatures will range in the upper teens to low 20s throughout.
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
Geneva residents are worried about reported ICE activity, though local police say they have no knowledge of investigations. Despite reports of federal agents targeting specific individuals, fear among immigrants has surged, causing a sharp drop in business for local establishments like Hernandez Mexican Store. Community organizations are working to educate immigrants on their rights amidst rising anxiety.
The Ovid VFW will host a fundraiser on February 1 to support those affected by the downtown fire. The event will feature a Chili Cook-Off, dinner service, raffles, and live music from several bands to raise funds for relief efforts. Organizers encourage the community to come together to aid those impacted by the recent disaster.
Wayne County’s Centralized Arraignment Part court has improved judicial efficiency and safety. By holding arraignments at fixed times, the system reduces logistical challenges and allows deputies to stay on patrol rather than traveling for court duties. The court also expedites protective orders, enhancing community safety.
The spotted lanternfly poses a significant threat to New York’s grape industry, experts warn. The invasive insect damages grapevines by feeding on sap and spreading mold, with potential losses reaching $8.8 million within three years if unchecked. Researchers are helping growers estimate prevention costs to mitigate damage.
Schuyler County is expanding its successful Facade Improvement Program with over $200,000 in matching grants. The initiative has revitalized villages like Watkins Glen and Montour Falls, transforming buildings and encouraging private investment. County leaders hope the program will continue to stimulate local economic growth.
