TRAFFIC IN VICTOR: Congestion along State Route 96 in the village and town of Victor has been the ire of motorists for years. Stop-and-go traffic, continued economic growth and population gain in Western Ontario County, and spillover from nearby Monroe County has prompted an ongoing debate about 'what to do'. The most-recent study is coming to a close. Consultants will direct the village on how to proceed, but that plan will likely involve a 'traffic relief valve'. A new road that would be built along an existing railroad bed that would be demolished. [READ MORE]
DEBATE RECAP: Everyone was a winner after the gubernatorial debate hosted by Spectrum News last night. For those who did not, or could not watch the televised debate between Democrat Kathy Hochul and Republican Lee Zeldin on Tuesday there won’t be another chance. The two sparred over the economy, crime, the Buffalo Bills new stadium, and how to stop the state’s continued population loss. [READ MORE]
TRIPLEDEMIC: Why are health leaders concerned about winter? Hospitals are already struggling with capacity issues. It’s a double-pronged problem. First, there’s the ongoing staff shortages that hospitals and healthcare facilities have faced since the pandemic. Second, is the rise of upper-respiratory illnesses that are not COVID-19. The answer, they say, is to get a COVID booster shot, flu shot, and practice social distancing when sick. [READ MORE]
DISABLED UNEMPLOYMENT: As National Disability Employment Awareness Month comes to a close, New Yorkers are contending there is more to do beyond October. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities is double that of those without disabilities. Sharon McLennon-Wier, executive director of the Center for the Independence of the Disabled-New York, explained workers with disabilities face numerous challenges on the job. She said in many workplaces, certain stigmas and “able-ism” still exist. [READ MORE]
CANANDAIGUA RESCUE BOAT: Officials in Canandaigua are not sold on the need for a fire rescue boat. Under a new proposal the city would pay upwards of $30,000 for a used fire rescue boat, a purchase price that would include its trailer. First responders say the Canandaigua Fire Department is called to around a dozen emergencies on the water that require a water bound response. City officials were somewhat split on whether the investment would be smart, or if the City should continue to rely on the sheriff’s office to have a presence on water. [READ MORE]
ENFIELD SHOOTING UPDATE: Law enforcement in Tompkins County is investigating a shooting that happened on Monday. There’s limited information right now about that investigation, but a 40-year-old was taken into custody after being convinced by authorities to participate in the investigation. [READ MORE]
SERIOUS CRASH IN YATES: Deputies say a 30-year-old was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital after a one-car crash along Route 14A in Barrington, Yates County on Tuesday. It happened around 6 p.m. north of Porters Corners Road when a vehicle crossed the center line and southbound lane – leaving the roadway. The vehicle ended up traveling nearly 300 yards before striking a ditch and culvert. It then struck a tree and came to rest in a wooded area. The investigation remains active. [READ MORE]
MISSING PERSON UPDATE: The search for a Jamesville man continues after his vehicle was recovered near a popular hiking area in Wayne County. 68-year-old David Benz was repotted missing on October 20th. Days later the search was centered around an area in Wolcott near a series of popular trail heads. First responders are actively searching for him now. [READ MORE]
MEALS ON WHEELS: Officials in Cayuga County say they need volunteers. They are putting the call out for volunteers for the Meals on Wheels. It’s the meal delivery service managed by the Cayuga County Office for the Aging. Volunteers are sought for one or two mornings per week to cover home-delivery at a senior housing complex in Auburn. The volunteer would pick up the food containers from a kitchen in Auburn, then make deliveries to about 10 homes in a housing complex. [READ MORE]
NEW UNEMPLOYMENT DATA: The New York State Department of Labor has released preliminary local area unemployment rates for September 2022. Last week New York State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 4.7% in August to 4.3% in September 2022. Cayuga, Seneca, Schuyler, Ontario, Yates, and Wayne counties all saw unemployment rates below 3%. [READ MORE]
FYE MAKING COMEBACK: For years, FYE was a mainstay at shopping malls across the U.S. Then, the entertainment industry began going digital, having a big impact on its business. Now, FYE is making a comeback. The company says its new goal is to be the go-to store for fans. The latest retail location added to the FYE lineup is Destiny USA. The store also has a location at Eastview Mall in Victor, which opened in recent months. [READ MORE]
