EXCLUSIVE: To rake or not to rake? Bagging up leaves could do a disservice to your yard!
A new report found raking and bagging leaves could be doing a disservice to your yard or garden. A National Wildlife Federation survey showed most people know throwing away their fall leaves is not ideal but they often do it anyway. Leaves on a lawn can serve as mulch. They keep the soil moist, suppress weeds, and cover roots to protect them in the winter. Jim Bitner, executive director of the New York State Horticultural Society, is a fruit farmer who is always puzzled by seeing people bag their leaves. He described how they can use those leaves to benefit the soil.
Auburn man detained after storming elementary school with a knife
A local man was arrested on Monday morning after rushing into Casey Park Elementary School with a weapon, causing panic among students and staff. Police say 36-year-old Jeffery Sanders Jr. was detained around 9:47 a.m., following a quick response by the Auburn Fire Department, who were on-site for a fire prevention demonstration. Authorities stated that Sanders ran towards a fire truck parked outside the school and subsequently made his way into the building, in the process knocking several kindergarten students, with one sustaining a minor head injury.
League candidate forum in Geneva cancelled: Voters will still have chance to hear from most candidates
The League of Women Voters (LWV) of Geneva announced the cancellation of their scheduled Candidates’ Forums for the upcoming city elections. The decision came after most of the races did not meet the League’s “No Empty Chair Policy.” This policy mandates at least two candidates for each seat up for election to participate in the forum.
