MALL NOT DEAD: Business is good at the Fingerlakes Mall in Aurelius, located on the edge of Auburn, according to Marketing Director Elizabeth Hebbard. She has been with the mall for ten months, and does small-tenant leasing, social media marketing and holiday decorating. “Right after this interview I’m gonna start putting up 14-16 Christmas trees throughout the building and I have cute little wall signs,” Hebberd explained of what’s a normal day at Fingerlakes. “We’ve also got banners and ornaments at our entryways.” The shopping mall has taken a unique approach to finding success in the post-pandemic world. ENROLLMENT & ELECTIONS: Crime and public safety are the two biggest issues on the minds of voters as November begins. The latest polling shows that Democrat Kathy Hochul is extending her lead over Republican Lee Zeldin in the race for governor. In the most-recent PIX11 News / Emerson College poll released on Tuesday showed Hochul with a 52-44 lead over Zeldin. There were 3% of respondents who were ‘undecided’. Polling experts say it’s not a good sign that Zeldin has lost some momentum over the last week of the race. While he gained a ton of ground since August, the Republican has stalled out in most polls, earning 44-46% of votes. [MORE]
BIG M CHANGE: Bob’s Big M on Park Lane in Wolcott has new ownership. Kiran, Prakash, and Dev Patel took over the market that was founded by Bob Delf Sr., more than a half-century ago. His children Robin and Bob Jr. ran the grocery store until October 8th. This is the second property operated by the Patels’, who bought Terry’s Food Mart two years ago in Cato. The family said they were excited about the opportunity expanding into a rural part of Wayne County presented. [MORE]
OPIOID DEATHS SURGE: A new report released by Comptroller Tom DiNapoli found that opioid deaths have surged since the pandemic. Fatalities from drug overdoses has increased across the board, but the numbers were particularly concerning in New York. According to the report, opioid-related deaths increased by 68% between 2019 and 2021. A startling 85% of those deaths involved fentanyl or a similar opioid. Monroe County had one of the highest rates of opioid-fatalities in the state. [MORE]
COURT RULES: Less than a week until Election Day and an appeals court has upheld New York’s absentee ballot laws. The move reverses a lower court’s decision, which would have prevented people to vote by absentee ballot over fear of COVID-19. It also reversed the portion of the law that allowed election boards to count ballots before Election Day. Hundreds-of-thousands of absentee ballots have already been sent out to voters.
