FLCC official: Shelter-in-place was prompted by person with a knife
Finger Lakes Community College activated a shelter-in-place alert on Tuesday after an alarming incident. A student was reportedly spotted near the campus entrance, wielding a knife. FLCC President Robert Nye communicated that the student, after being observed off-campus, cycled onto the campus premises. The administration immediately sent out a warning message to the FLCC community. The subsequent shelter-in-place order was issued the moment it was confirmed the student had entered the campus.
Thruway toll increases will be voted on next week: How much will they increase if approved?
The New York State Thruway Authority is poised to vote on proposed toll hikes set to begin in 2024. That session is slated for Monday, September 18, where the board of directors will deliberate over increasing tolls for both E-ZPass and tolls-by-mail users on the extensive 570-mile highway. Should the proposal gain approval, in-state E-ZPass users can anticipate a 5% toll raise in 2024, with another 5% hike in 2027.
State officials want NWS to expand wireless alerts to include severe winter weather
Attorney General Letitia James is pressing the National Weather Service (NWS) to expand its wireless emergency alerts (WEAs) to include severe winter weather warnings for residents. Presently, the NWS issues these regionalized WEAs for various extreme weather conditions, but severe winter storms, such as blizzards and ice events, are notably absent. This call to action follows a devastating storm in Western New York last December, which resulted in 47 fatalities.
