Proposed OSHA standards raise concerns for volunteer fire departments
OSHA’s plan to update emergency response standards has alarmed state and local officials who say the sweeping changes could be financially devastating for volunteer fire departments. The updated standards, incorporating numerous NFPA guidelines, would increase physical exams, shorten equipment lifespans, and mandate extensive training hours—up to 300 annually.

Federal authorities are investigating a fatal incident at Auburn’s West End Arts Campus construction site, where a worker died on Nov. 1. OSHA has begun an inspection of contractor Fabsite Industries to determine if any safety violations occurred during the $4.7 million project at the Cayuga Museum of History & Art and Schweinfurth Art Center. State and local officials announced significant progress on the Village of Watkins Glen’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative, highlighting the completion of the Harborside Village Apartments and the groundbreaking for an ADA-accessible playground at Clute Park.
