Ontario County’s housing assessment is complete: Four public meetings scheduled for September
After a year-long intensive study, Ontario County, in collaboration with Urban Partners, is wrapping up its county-wide Housing Needs Assessment. The initiative, which started last year, aimed to analyze the current housing stock, pinpoint disparities in housing availability, recognize factors causing such disparities, and strategize solutions.
Seneca County declares housing state of emergency
Seneca County officials, led by Board of Supervisors Chairman Michael Enslow, have declared a state of emergency over an acute housing shortage. Following a nearly two-year comprehensive Housing Needs Assessment, concluded in June 2023, the county’s Department of Planning & Community Development found a severe lack of available housing catering to various economic sectors of the population. The study, funded by a Community Development Block Grant from the New York State Office of Community Renewal, underlined that the housing stock for both high- and low-income residents is critically low.
After Thurston officials say they’ll vote on law to ban sewage sludge spreading, Casella issues legal warning
A Steuben County town’s plan to hold a final vote Sept. 20 “at the latest” on a proposed local law banning field-spreading of municipal sewage sludge prompted warnings last night that the law would be challenged in court. “Let’s face it. The Town of Thurston is likely to wind up in court over this issue,” Janet Thigpen, chair of the Steuben County Water Quality Coordinating Committee, told the town board at a public hearing last night.
