Latest updates on last week’s devastating flooding in Finger Lakes
Residents of Steuben County are grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding caused by the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby. The flooding, which struck Canisteo and surrounding areas on Friday, left homes and vehicles submerged, forcing many to evacuate.

After the Jasper-Troupsburg High School suffered additional damage from flooding last week, local officials have asked for FEMA approval to move the school entirely. The building was approved for flood mitigation work last fall.
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer is advocating for a $30 million federal investment in New York State’s Mesonet weather monitoring system, a $10 million increase from last year.

TRAGIC ACCIDENT: A Bath man was killed Tuesday morning after being crushed by a collapsing wall at a local machine shop. Police responded to Clark Specialty on Delaware Avenue around 9:51 a.m. after receiving reports of the incident. Earlier this year, there was a major fire there causing a near-100% destruction of the property, reports indicated at the time.
NO MAJOR DAMAGE: Firefighters responded to a blaze at the Cayuga County Office Building on Genesee Street Tuesday afternoon, after smoke was detected on the upper floors. The building, which has been closed for the summer due to maintenance issues that will ultimately require an extensive overhaul, did not suffer any new internal damage.
LAWSUIT IN NEWARK: A former resident of DeMay Living Center in Newark has filed a lawsuit against the facility, alleging negligence that led to multiple injuries in 2023. The lawsuit was reported Tuesday by the Finger Lakes Times and brought by attorney Anna Cond on behalf of Nancy Tarantelli. It was filed in Wayne County Court.
SENTENCED IN ONTARIO: A Geneva man has been sentenced to 43 years to life in prison for attempted murder and attempting to hire a hitman. Jerry Lovett Jr. was convicted of shooting a man multiple times during an argument in January 2023. The victim survived the attack.
