A violent assault in the town of Waterloo early Tuesday escalated into a shootout and standoff, prompting a shelter-in-place alert and a large police response. Authorities say Randy Mark Davis Jr., 45, forced his way into a residence, assaulted the homeowner, stole firearms, and later opened fire on responding officers. The standoff lasted several hours, during which Davis moved between mobile homes and fired at propane tanks before surrendering after CS gas was deployed. He faces multiple felony charges, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Former Senator Mike Nozzolio and representatives from NextEra Energy will visit Ovid on Wednesday to support recovery efforts following January’s devastating Main Street fire. The group will tour the fire-damaged area and present donations to the Ovid Fire Department and the Ovid Fire Relief Fund. A gathering at the fire department headquarters will bring together local officials, fire personnel, and members of the relief committee. The visit marks a significant moment in the ongoing effort to help residents and businesses rebuild.
Canandaigua City Council held off on a rezoning decision for a proposed 79-home development after residents voiced concerns about traffic, drainage, and neighborhood impact. The developer, Canandaigua Homes LLC, is seeking a Planned Unit Development designation to allow smaller-lot single-family homes, down from earlier plans for 186 townhomes. Neighbors acknowledged the likelihood of development but asked for changes to design, construction access, and stormwater management. Council kept the public hearing open and will revisit the proposal on April 7.

The blaze, reported on March 27 near Abbott Lane, caused significant damage but no injuries. Following an investigation by Ithaca Police and State Police fire investigators, authorities determined the fire was intentionally set. The suspect was arraigned in Tompkins County Court and released to a guardian, as the investigation remains ongoing.
Dundee Central School District voters approved a $28 million capital project on Monday by a wide margin, with the measure passing 186-67. District officials say the plan will not increase local taxes, as most funding comes from state aid and capital reserves. The project will enhance school safety, update STEM, arts, and athletic spaces, and address key infrastructure needs like HVAC systems. Superintendent Chris Wood called the timing ideal and encouraged residents to schedule facility tours to learn more.
