Report: NY kids’ pandemic-era education troubles persist
A new report found New York kids’ well-being is improving despite lingering pandemic issues. The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Kids Count Data Book ranks the state 29th, up from 30th. While some indicators saw mild increases, education saw vast growth but it is not a sweeping victory. Fourth graders’ reading and eighth graders’ math proficiency dropped considerably since 2019.

The owner of a gravel quarry who seeks a state permit to quintuple the size of his mine has failed to comply with a February 2022 state consent order to restore 8.5 acres that he mined illegally. As the Department of Environmental Conservation evaluates Martin Wojcik’s controversial application to expand adjacent to the Watkins Glen State Park, the agency has quietly postponed the deadline for compliance with its reclamation order three times. New Yorkers can now carry a digital version of their driver’s license, learner permit, or ID on their smartphones. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the launch of Mobile ID, which can be used at certain airports and businesses nationwide. [Read More]

Don Juan Cafe Restaurant in Auburn has reopened with a fresh look after being closed by the state for unpaid taxes. The Puerto Rican restaurant at 24 Chapman Ave., part of a Syracuse-based chain, reopened on May 13, according to its Facebook page. [Read More]
Two women were seriously injured in a car crash on Route 104 in Sodus on Tuesday afternoon. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reported the incident happened around 12:50 p.m. June Seiler, 65, was driving westbound with her mother, Martha White, 87, when they collided with another vehicle from behind. Both cars sustained heavy damage. [Read More]
Senator Pam Helming and local grocery store owners are urging the state to delay new hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant standards, set to take effect January 1, 2025, to allow more time for a smoother transition. The proposed Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) regulations would ban new products and equipment containing HFCs, which are widely used in refrigeration and HVAC systems. [Read More]

State Assemblyman Phil Palmesano and Senator Tom O’Mara honored James “J.D.” Tette at Penn Yan Academy on Monday for winning the NYSPHSAA Class C Cross Country state championship last November.
