Canandaigua duo face charges in court over serious pit bull attack
A Canandaigua couple is facing criminal charges after their pit bull severely injured a father and son. Casey Murphy and Madison Herendeen are due in court today for assault and reckless endangerment after their unleashed dog attacked Ryan VanGrol and his 10-year-old son, Wren, causing severe nerve damage. The dog, euthanized after the incident, had previously bitten another child, prompting safety measures that authorities say were ignored.
Finger Lakes Forecast: Presented by Littlejohn & Barbi Orthodontics!
Mild this AM, then snow builds back in for some.
The National Weather Service has continued Winter Weather Advisories for most of the region, despite last night’s snowfall not materializing to what forecasters originally expected. There will be more snow today, though. Another 2-5 inches, which will be helped by Lake Ontario, combined with falling temperatures, will make travel tricky across the Finger Lakes.
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan and Republican lawmakers are pushing for an opt-out from New York’s zero-emission school bus mandate. They argue that rural districts lack the infrastructure to support electric buses and that the financial burden of compliance is too high without state assistance. Critics of the mandate say the timeline is unrealistic, while supporters emphasize the need to meet climate goals.
A 22-year-old Middlesex man was killed in a Rushville crash after his truck struck a tree. Deputies identified the victim as Austin M. Renfer, who was driving a 2022 Dodge Ram 2500 when he crashed at the intersection of Main and Bassett streets. Emergency crews extricated Renfer from the wreckage, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators are working to determine the cause.
Reports of federal immigration officers in Geneva have sparked concern among residents. Witnesses claim agents wearing “police” and “HSI” vests have been seen in areas housing migrant workers, with some saying individuals have been detained. Local law enforcement agencies deny knowledge of the operation, and federal authorities have yet to comment.
The Tompkins County Legislature is calling for an environmental review of the Cargill Salt Mine under Cayuga Lake. Lawmakers want a formal Environmental Impact Statement to assess risks associated with storing brine water and potential mine collapses. While environmental groups support the measure, critics warn it could threaten jobs in the region.
Gov. Kathy Hochul vowed to continue state-funded housing projects despite a federal funding freeze. The Trump administration’s attempt to pause federal grants is under legal review, but Hochul has announced $110 million in additional state funding for housing initiatives. State leaders fear the freeze could complicate budget negotiations, but Hochul remains committed to expanding affordable housing.
