Governor Kathy Hochul’s $252 billion executive budget, a record-breaking plan with a $19 billion increase over last year, has faced criticism for being unsustainable and neglecting long-term affordability issues. Republican lawmakers argue the proposal burdens middle-class taxpayers and accelerates population loss, despite historic investments in education, housing, and public safety. Hochul defends the plan, citing $5 billion in tax cuts and reserves for future downturns as essential for New York’s safety and affordability. As lawmakers prepare for budget hearings, debate continues over the fiscal approach and its impact on New Yorkers.
