Thousands were without power across the Finger Lakes as damaging winds swept through with a powerful storm system. Crews were working around the clock to get the lights back on; as first responders worked to keep roads open. LIVE AT 11 AM: Finger Lakes Winter Carnival in Canandaigua organizers in-studio for FLX Weekly!
The Finger Lakes Winter Carnival returns for its third year from Saturday, Jan. 13 to Sunday, Jan. 14 with Shop, Sip and Taste events happening across downtown Canandaigua, the Canandaigua lakefront and The Lake House on Canandaigua. Jessica Thompson, The Lake House on Canandaigua Activities Manager and Meg Fuller, Director of Sales Marketing at Bristol Mountain are two of the organizers and will be in-studio to talk about this weekend’s event.
Cargill Inc. is seeking the state’s permission to add a new 150-acre underground storage area for water that has been steadily leaking into its Cayuga Lake salt mine, according to a recently disclosed application to modify its mining permit. The state Department of Environmental Conservation is apparently still reviewing the application, which was filed seven months ago but only made public Monday through a Freedom of Information Law request. Geneva’s City Council has unanimously agreed to establish a task force to tackle the city’s flooding issues, particularly following a year marked by severe floods. The task force, consisting of 12 members including city staff and community representatives, will focus on developing protocols and policies for flood response. It will delve into areas such as infrastructure, homeowner support, emergency planning, and communication strategies. The team is set to present their recommendations to the City Council in November. An inmate at Five Points Correctional Facility attacked three officers with a homemade shank, resulting in injuries. The incident occurred when the 26-year-old inmate, serving a 14- to 16-year sentence, refused to exit his cell despite multiple orders. A cell extraction team was deployed, but the inmate, armed with a shank fashioned from his electronic tablet, resisted and attacked the officers as they opened the cell door. [Read More]

ORANGE GAME DAY: Syracuse looks to bounce back against Boston College
After a week off, the Syracuse Orange (10-4, 1-2) are back in action tonight when they welcome the Boston College Eagles (10-4, 1-2) to the JMA Wireless Dome at 9 p.m. Syracuse had their season-long five-game win streak snapped last Tuesday when they fell 86-66 to Duke on the road. Meanwhile, Boston College picked up a 95-87 victory at Georgia Tech last Saturday. The Orange have won ten consecutive games against the Eagles and hold a 57-26 advantage in the all-time series.
