The discovery of nearly two dozen dead geese at Charles E. Sexton Memorial Park in Webster has sparked concerns over a potential outbreak of Avian Flu, with test results from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation still pending. While much uncertainty remains around this situation in Webster, Montezuma Audubon Center Director Chris Lajewski says concerns around Avian Flu underscore a condition found in birds more frequently over the last few years. Daryl Hilkert isn’t sure how long his new Geneva business will be closed, but he hopes to be reopened in the coming months. This week Hilkert announced on Facebook that High Points, a legal cannabis business operating at a former Bank along 5&20 in Geneva would be forced to close as its permit expired. High Points was operating under a special ‘showcase’ permit option, which ultimately expires on Sunday (Dec. 31). [Read More]
Governor Kathy Hochul has announced 37 new nominations for the State and National Registers of Historic Places including three significant places in our area. Those include the South Farmington Friends Cemetery and Meetinghouse Site in Ontario County, Third Methodist Episcopal Church of Sodus in Wayne County, and another in Tompkins. [Read More]
Cayuga County is set to receive over $443,000 in matching funds from the New York Department of State, recognizing the county’s successful implementation of shared services projects. This award, part of the County-Wide Shared Services Initiative, matches the savings achieved in the first year of the county’s initiatives. In 2020, Cayuga County executed three projects under its shared services plan, saving taxpayers a total of $443,481. [Read More]
And finally, Governor Kathy Hochul has vetoed the ‘Grieving Families Act’ for the second time, a bill that sought to reform a 175-year-old wrongful death statute. The proposed legislation aimed to ease the process for families to seek legal recourse in cases of wrongful death due to negligence, including medical malpractice, by allowing them to sue for emotional damages.
